Why do people embark on the dangerous journey from Africa to Europe? What are their hopes and expectations? Samia Yusuf Omar is one of them. She was born in Mogadishu, Somalia, during a terrible civil war. At only 9 years she discovers her special talent: she is faster than all the other boys and girls. With the help of her best friend Ali, Samia turns this talent into a dream and represented Somalia at the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008. She finished last during the women’s 200-meter race, but the world cheered her on in a truly magical global moment. Upon returning to Somalia, Samia immediately became a victim of retaliation from Muslim leaders for fleeing without wearing a headscarf – a mortal sin that cannot be forgiven. Samia decides to make the journey to Europe. Her amazing and inspiring story is that of a young athlete who defied all odds, but more importantly, it is a global story of hope for all those who cross the seas in search for freedom and a better life. Although Samia’s story ultimately ends in tragedy, it is wrought with hope. For even though Samia dies, she can never be defeated.
Based on the true story of Samia Yusuf Omar, who inspired the bestseller "Don’t Tell Me You’re Afraid" from Guiseppe Catozzella.
